Day 5 - Land Development: Go Green
Land development problem it addresses:
Urbanization in the buffer zone around El Yunque
Location near EYF:
The buffer zone around El Yunque Forest
Who benefits from project: (describe)
a. EYF Animals and Plants
Enhance the green areas around the Forest, providing more migratory areas for animals in and out of the Forest. Capturing more water in gardens will reduce runoff, allowing water to penetrate soils and roots and stay in the buffer area and remain part of the water cycle around the Forest, helping both plants and animals
b. Residents in the Buffer Zone
Enhances the beauty and outdoor space around their homes
Detailed Project Description:
a. What is being created?
Create community gardens at schools, community centers, office parks, religious buildings, etc., with non-invasive plants and fruits
b .Describe the outcome and how it addresses the water pollution:
This project is education, ecological, sociological, political and economic focused, as it is designed to get groups of people of all ages working together to improve their own local environment, while having a larger impact on the ecology of the El Yunque buffer zone and the Forest itself. While one small garden won't make a difference to the Forest, returning areas to green and preventing more pavement will help maintain the ecosystem in the way it was before the development began.
List different parts of projects that eco-tourists will work on as teams
a. Team 1: Build fences around designated plots
b. Team 2: Build raised platforms as needed for plantings
c. Team 3: Work the soil and plant
d. Team 4: Build sign board and create signage (in English and Spanish) for garden and its plants
e. Team 5: Build benches and paint them for congregating in Community Garden
Skills used: Teamwork, horticulture, light construction, artwork and computer
HIGHLIGHT all that apply: (Ecology, sociology, education, economic, political)
Ecology: Help the buffer zone
Sociology: Work with diverse groups of people
Education: Raises awareness about the importance of the buffer zone
Economic: Planting flowers and fruits will enable people to learn about sustainable agriculture and its economic benefits
Political: Meet with local political political leaders to explain the benefits of this project so they hopefully will enforce buffer zoning regulations in the future, without feeling the pressure from local developers
Besides their own groups, who else will they work with?
Work with local Puerto Rican community groups, such as school groups, boys and girls clubs, 4H groups, PTA organizations, and Church groups
