Day 6 - Land Development: Clean up the Belt

Litter and trash in the buffer zone

The buffer zone around El Yunque Forest: the Belt
Who benefits from project: (describe)
a. EYF Animals and Plants
Reduce debris in the buffer zone which is preventing animals from migrating to and through this area. Remove trash and chemicals which can have negative impacts on the food chain in the buffer zone and ultimately on the ecology of the El Yunque Forest ecosystem
b. Residents of the Buffer Zone
Maintain the beauty of their neighborhoods
Detailed Project Description:
a. What is being created?
Once a month, have "Clean up the Belt" Clean - up days, similar to El Yunque's annual clean up events in the Forest itself.
b .Describe the outcome and how it addresses the water pollution:
This project is teamwork, ecological, and educational in that groups of people living in communities will work together to achieve common objectives. Not only will the litter and trash be removed, but a community consciousness will be raised, which, should result in less and less trash being collected each month as residents properly dispose of their trash before clean up days take place. It will also include a RRR (Reduce, Reuse and Recycle) educational component as the project teams will create brochures with the benefits of RRR to individuals and to the Forest.
List different parts of projects that eco-tourists will work on as teams
a. Team 1: Research and produce RRR brochure (in English and Spanish) : 1 for children; 1 for adults
b. Team 2: Break into teams for 6 hours of clean up
c. Team 3: VIdeo the day and capture the spirit of the community working together
d. Team 4: Write articles and blogs for print and internet
e. Team 5: Place recycling bins throughout designated areas of the Belt
Skills used: Light interview skills, research, writing, communication, artwork

Besides their own groups, who else will they work with?
Work with local Puerto Rican Community groups, Municipalities, Solid Waste Authority, and local Conservation groups and local companies to Clean Up the Belt. Building on the momentum of the Forest Clean up days, this project will work with Forest Service Staff, and American Airlines, the sponsor of the Forest Clean up Day.
