Day 7 - Endangered Species: Help the Endangered
Endangered Species problem it addresses:
This project deals with the endangered Puerto Rican Parrot, and a wide range of factors which impact the Parrot and other endangered species.
Location at EYF:
The project takes place at the captive breeding aviary in El Yunque Forest. In the afternoon, the participants will split their time between the Forest and El Portal Visitors Center.
Who benefits from project: (describe)
a. EYF Animals and Plants
The Puerto Rican Parrot in captivity and its potential successors benefit from the breeding program. As this project creates awareness, other endangered species and potentially endangered species, will also benefit from the increased awareness.
b. Visitors
Visitors will benefit from being assured that there will continue to be parrots in the Forest over time. They will learn about the conditions which created the endangerment and those which still exist for the Parrot and other Forest species.
c. Puerto Ricans outside EYF
Puerto Ricans outside the Forest will benefit as they will have a greater awaeness of what they can do to help species which are already endangered, or those at risk.
Detailed Project Description:
a. What is being created?
The participants will create a video or You Tube to share research and information for visitors and Puerto Ricans not at the Forest to gain an appreciation and education about the nature of endangered species in general, the Puerto Rican Parrot specifically. They will learn how the unique challenge is linked to broader environmental and ecological issues, such as development, deforestation, invasive species, and pollution. The You Tube will capture elements of the captive breeding program, the challenge of the parrot living in the wild, and how the wide range of land development, invasive species and pollution issues put the parrot and other species at risk.
There will be a fundraising link on the video or You Tube, which asks viewers to donate money to the Aviary, enabling scientists to make more artificial nests, purchase more monitoring devices, and publish articles about their research and results.
b .Describe the outcome and how it addresses the endangered species problem:
Helping people understand that there are things in their own lives that can impact endangered animals is important, as many people think that the problem is in the Forest and there is nothing they do can do to impact it. They do not realize that the ecosystem is not small, does not have walls, and that actions and behviors in the land outside the Forest and throughout the Forest can impact how endangered animals survive. In addition, even small donations can help this project significantly, as the supplies that the scientists need are not costly. This contribution would allow people to feel that they have a financial ability to help, even if they donate only a dollar.
List different parts of projects that eco-tourists will work on as teams
Each team will have a chance to do all activities:
a. Activity 1: Work with scientists to moniotor behaviors and activities of the captive parrots. Document activities.
b. Activity 2: Video other endangered species throughout forest on a "nature walk" with Forest Service.
c. Activity 3: Put together script for You Tube.
d. Activity 4: Create and edit You Tube and upload.
e. Activity 5: Place it on a link at El Portal Visitors Center.
Skills used:
Data collection, Observation, video and computer, writing and speaking, hiking, teamwork
HIGHLIGHT all that apply: (Ecology, sociology, education, economic, political)
Besides their own groups, who else will they work with?
Work with Forest Service staff to monitor captive breeding activities, explore other endangered species, take notes, video. Work with students from Science Clubs in nearby schools. Create You Tube in English and Spanish.
